Quite frankly, there is no words to describe or truly honor Socrates. An enigmatic figure, probably born about 469 BC and died 399 BC by execution, he is considered to be one of the founders of Western philosophy, arguably the greatest of them all.

Socrates was sentenced to death by the Athenian assembly and summarily executed  after a mock trial, accused of being an atheist and a sophist. At such event (again a charade which was nothing but a coward legal consequence of asking politico-philosophic questions of his students), Socrates gave a famous defense speech. At that event, he condensed amazing wisdom an perennial teachings through immortal sentences, among those this one: AN UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING. Death before dishonor.

At the execution, which he carried out by his own hand, he asked one of his disciples why he was crying, to which he replied "because you had been sentenced guilty... and you are innocent" . Socrates then looked at him and replied: "would you rather prefer me to be guilty?" and without further ado, he carried out the sentence and drank the poison.
