Mens Rea (guilty mind), in Anglo-American Common law, the definition of a criminal offense involves not only an act or omission and its consequences (actus reus) but also the accompanying mental state of the actor (mens rea) All criminal systems require an element of criminal intent for most crimes, such as the one that occasionally burns within.

In broad terms, four kinds of mens rea could be identified: Intent (the explicit and conscious desire to commit a dangerous or illegal act), Knowledge (being aware that actions will have certain results, fail to care), Recklessness (the decision to commit a certain action despite knowing about associated risks) and Negligence.
